About the Orchestra

The People’s Folk Instruments Orchestra: A 90-Year Legacy of Kharkiv’s Culture

A Legacy Born in 1935

Founded in 1935, the People’s Folk Instruments Orchestra is one of the most prestigious youth musical collectives in Ukraine. Established at the Kharkiv Palace of Children and Youth Creativity (historically known as the Palace of Pioneers), it has been a center for artistic excellence for nine decades. The orchestra was the first of its kind to offer a professional platform for children and teenagers to master traditional Ukrainian instruments, fostering national identity from a young age.

Continuity and Leadership

The modern success and artistic heights of the orchestra are inseparable from its long-time Artistic Director and Principal Conductor, Maestro Valeriy Horodovenko. Under his dedicated leadership, the collective earned the distinguished title of “People’s Artistic Collective.” Maestro Horodovenko has created a unique educational environment where young musicians develop not only technical skills but also a lifelong passion for Ukrainian culture.

Repertoire and Musical Identity

The orchestra’s sound is defined by a rich palette of traditional Ukrainian instruments, including the domra, bandura, bayan, and cymbalom. Our repertoire is a sophisticated blend of classical masterpieces, complex arrangements of Ukrainian folk songs, and contemporary compositions. This diversity allows the orchestra to showcase the incredible versatility of folk instruments, proving they can resonate with modern audiences worldwide.

By specializing in this unique sound and teaching youth to perform such challenging repertoire, we bridge the gap between historical heritage and the modern generation. This “Kharkiv school” of youth folk performance, nurtured within the Palace of Children and Youth Creativity, is celebrated for its professional approach, technical brilliance, and deep emotional resonance.

Resilience in the Heart of Kharkiv

Despite the immense challenges faced by the city of Kharkiv in recent years, the orchestra remains a vibrant and active collective. It continues to be a home for young musicians and graduates who are united by a common goal: to keep the Ukrainian musical tradition alive. Our history is not just about the past; it is a story of survival, cultural resistance, and an unwavering commitment to art in the face of adversity. We are committed to ensuring that the music of our ancestors continues to be played by the hands of our youth.
